Data and Definitions

I have a question about a specific metric or definition. Where should I look?

Refer to the AHP Standards Manual or Glossary of Terms.

What is the difference between recorded revenue and production revenue?

Recorded revenue includes gifts recognized for accounting purposes in the current year, such as cash and irrevocable pledges. Production revenue includes recorded revenue plus additional commitments that are not yet bookable, such as revocable or conditional gifts.

What is the difference between direct and indirect FTEs?

Direct FTEs perform frontline fundraising activities (e.g., major gift officers, annual giving officers), while indirect FTEs provide support (e.g., operations, finance, marketing, prospect research).

What is included in fundraising expenses?

All costs associated with fundraising should be included, including compensation (direct and indirect) and non-compensation expenses such as software, travel, and consulting.

What is considered a major gift?

AHP defines major gifts as gifts of $10,000 or more from individuals. Even if your organization uses another threshold internally, please use $10,000 as the threshold for reporting the number and value of major gifts for the purpose of the survey.

What if my data doesn’t perfectly align with AHP definitions?

Provide your best estimate and aim for consistency year over year.
